New Mexico-based Source Verified GoodWood™ (GoodWood®) has been collaborating over the past year with Build Green New Mexico (BGNM) and the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association (SFAHBA) in an innovative effort to get locally sourced and responsibly harvested wood products recognized by New Mexico’s premier green building industry.
GoodWood is a forest source verification program verifying that wood from federal, state, tribal, or private lands is legally and responsibly harvested for the purpose of restoring and protecting New Mexico’s forests. Only GoodWood tracks the custody of New Mexico’s wood products from the source forest through processing and retail sales.
Build Green New Mexico inspects and rates buildings in four categories: Energy, Water, Indoor Air Quality, and Sustainability and awards four levels of certification: Code-plus, Silver, Gold, and Emerald.
The use of GoodWood products will offer additional, non-mandatory practices that could contribute to certification at the Gold or Emerald level. Homes certified as Gold or Emerald may be eligible to receive the transferrable New Mexico Sustainable Building Tax Credits, which benefits New Mexicans by incentivizing builders to build energy-efficient homes. This program, administered by New Mexico Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Division, is one of the very few such programs in the nation.

LOCALLY SOURCED “GOOD WOOD” NOW PART OF BUILD GREEN NEW MEXICO
Santa Fe, NM – Jan. 16, 2023 –New Mexico just got more sustainable.
In partnership with Build Green New Mexico (BGNM), the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association (SFAHBA), and the New Mexico Energy, Minerals, & Natural Resources Department (NMEMNRD), New Mexico-based Source Verified Good Wood® (GoodWood®) is proud to announce an innovative effort to support the use of locally sourced and responsibly harvested wood products in New Mexico’s premier green building industry.
GoodWood is a sustainable forestry verification program that tracks the custody of New Mexico’s wood products from the forest through processing to retail sale. Builders who use GoodWood products can now earn points towards BGNM Gold or Emerald certification, making them eligible to receive the transferrable Sustainable Building Tax Credit (SBTC). Administered by NMEMNRD, SBTC is one of a few such programs in the nation.
The GoodWood program, funded through a USDA Forest Service grant, is growing a collaborative of forest industry leaders interested in reducing wildfire threats and restoring the health of New Mexico’s forests and watersheds.
“We are proud to be in partnership with Build Green New Mexico. The wood products we verify can now contribute to sustainable building in New Mexico while also protecting our forests and supporting our communities and local wood products industry. GoodWood is a win-win-win program.” said Rachel Wood, the Santa Fe area professional Forester behind the GoodWood initiative.
The BGNM program inspects and rates buildings in four categories: Energy, Water, Indoor Air Quality, and Sustainability; and awards four levels of certification: Code-plus, Silver, Gold, and Emerald. Miles Conway, Executive Director of the SFAHBA stated, “this project fit perfectly with our goal to figure out how to source more building materials locally and sustainably. We are excited to see the immediate and long-term benefits to our members, forests, and economy.”
